Countryside Attractions

Sussex is a largely rural county and has many beautiful country walks and a range of rural attractions. Visit the following sites to find out more:

Vineyards - Just outside Eastbourne is the English Wine Centre which includes a wine museum and stocks the best wines produced by local vineyards. It hosts a long running annual wine festival and has regular tastings. Details of all this and their popular personalised wine labelling service are available on this website.

Bluebell Railway - The Bluebell Railway operates steam trains between Sheffield Park and Kingscote and also features a museum. The railway was used as the setting for the recent Carlton film of E. Nesbit's children's classic The Railway Children - more about that on the website.

Kent & East Sussex Steam Railway - One of Britain's premier rural railways, operating steam trains between Northiam in Sussex and Tenterden in Kent. The line takes you through some of East Sussex and Kent's most picturesque country scenery and there are a range of other attractions such as themed evenings and banquets aboard the trains - see website for details.

Drusilla's Zoo - The best small zoo in England, located in the countryside just outside Eastbourne near the village of Alfriston. Details of animals, opening times and facilities are available from the website.

Nature Reserves - There are also several RSPB nature reserves in the area, at Fore Wood near Crowhurst, Pulborough Brooks near Pulborough in West Sussex and Dungeness in Kent. Details of opening times, access, prices and wildlife can be found on the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds website.
