Scooters Gear Up for First South Downs Run Eastbourne seafront is gearing up to provide the starting line for the first ever Lambretta Club of Great Britain South Downs Run as over 100 iconic Italian Scooters take over the south coast. On Saturday 18 April a rally of Lambretta motor scooters will line up next to the Wish Tower ready to commence their ride along the south coast taking in Beachy Head, Brighton, Winchester and Eastleigh. A brand new event, visitors will be able to marvel at the spectacular display of the classic scooter that dates back more than 60 years to 1947. Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr Susan Morris said We are very pleased to be welcoming the Lambretta Club of Great Britain to Eastbourne and excited that the resort has been chosen as the starting point for this new event. With plenty of motoring events taking place in the town in 2009 including Magnificent Motors and the MG South Downs Run later in the year; motoring fans will find plenty to keep them entertained in Eastbourne. Taking various guises and designs, more than 100 different Lambretta scooters will be taking part with some riders travelling from as far as Scotland for the event. Visitors can expect to see 1960s Italian mod style scooters with lights and mirrors, modern Indian and Spanish versions, plus many unique scooters that have been customised with paintwork and extreme tuning. The South Downs Run has been organised after calls from Lambretta scooterists across the country for a southern event, equivalent to the Coast to Coast event that takes place in the North every year. Keen to match the vast countryside journeyed through in Northern England, the scooterists are looking forward to riding through the spectacular South Downs, with stunning views across the coast. With plenty more motoring events coming up in Eastbourne during 2009, the resort is preparing to be packed with vehicles over the next few months. Magnificent Motors takes place from 2-3 May on the Western Lawns and is set to welcome more than 500 classic and vintage cars, motorbikes, buses, steam traction engines and military and commercial vehicles in the free two day event. Plus visitors can also look forward to two Classic Vehicle Shows at Eastbourne Miniature Steam Railway, Classic Bus Rally, Eastbourne Motor Show and plenty of biking action as the Eastbourne Eagles Speedway season gets underway at Arlington Stadium. |
