RAILWAY STATION GIVEN DEFIBRILLATOR
EASTBOURNE railway station has been equipped with a life-saving device, thanks to the generosity of the Rotary Club of Eastbourne.
The defibrillator, worth 1,600, was presented to the manager of Eastbourne station Kevin Nye.
He said, "Southern Railway at Eastbourne have now received a new defibrillator machine which has kindly been donated by the Rotary Club of Eastbourne.
"Southern would like to pass on its thanks and appreciation to them for the kind donation of this life-saving apparatus.
"All staff at the station will receive full training in conjunction with Sussex Ambulance Service on its use and application. Our hope is that it will never need to be used, but it is comforting to know it is there."
The machine consists of a central unit and a set of two electrodes. It provides a source of controlled power and the two electrodes can be placed directly on the patient. The defibrillator is designed to deliver an electric shock to the patient, in an effort to stop a cardiac arrest.
Dr Peter Nash, from the Rotary Club of Eastbourne, said, "It's an extremely impressive piece of kit. The machine will speak to you and give the operator step by step instructions.
"It monitors the state of the heart and then primes up to the required level. I think it's excellent and if it is used once and saves one persons life, then that is money well spent."
